OVERVIEW
NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE
PROJECT PHOTOS
Moving a Monster Niki de Saint Phalle

In the Summer of 2009, AWSD was asked to move a sculpture by Niki de Saint Phalle from one location to another on a private estate in Rancho Santa Fe, California. Constructed of steel tubing and wire mesh, with a six inch layer of gunnite and applied glass and tile mosaic, the work measures 39 feet long and stands 16 feet high – and has a total weight of 120,000 lbs. In order to move this amazing work of art, ASWD assembled a team of soil and civil engineers, landscape architects, crane operators and contractors to devise a plan of action.

After the careful removal of sections of mosaic, the piece was cut into eleven different sections, and using a 240-ton crane, was loaded onto flatbed trucks for the drive to its new home. Twenty two truckloads of dirt were brought in to form its new pedestal, and once the new concrete pad had cured, the work was welded back together and new gunnite was spayed. The final touch was the reapplication of the mosaic – a task entrusted to Niki's most skilled fabricator, who had overseen the original installation some eleven years earlier.
